La Tana dell’Istrice
137Eu Double, 230Eu Suite, all year, including Breakfast, Tax and Service
ocated in northern Lazio between Viterbo and Orvieto in a 12th century village, this property is only a 90-minute drive north of Fiumicino Airport in Rome . The building dates to the 12th century and was formerly a private palazzo. It is unpretentious, as are the very warm and friendly owners, the Mottura family. The comfortably furnished rooms with exposed beam ceilings, are air-conditioned and have tiled bathrooms with marble sinks. Most rooms have showers. 3 have tub and shower. Below the palazzo are the Mottura wine caves, the deepest dating to the Etruscan period, and Mr. Mottura is delighted to offer a tour and wine tasting (definitely worth doing!) to his guests. Wines can be purchased as well. He also delights in showing his guests his farm where he grows grapes, olives and a host of fruits and vegetables.
Meals are served family style at La Tana dell'Istrice ("The Porcupine's Lair") and feature produce grown organically on the Mottura estate. As the porcupine is the symbol for ecology, it was chosen as the symbol for the property and the hotel. In our opinion, the MAP rates at La Tana are one of the best buys in Italy because the meals include Mottura wines with each course. La Tana dell'Istrice offers an excellent, reasonably priced base to explore the fascinating surrounding countryside.
La Tana dell'Istrice is three stories and there is NO ELEVATOR. Hotel is closed in January, February, and March.

Park Hotel Villa Grazioli
200Eu Double low season, to 480Eu Double Suite, including breakfast, tax and Service
This 16th century villa is one of the finest historical hotels in Lazio. Located in the upscale suburbs of Rome, just 10 kilometers south of the ring road, Villa Grazioli sits in a park atop one of the Alban hills. From the main villa, guests have a panoramic view of Rome and - on very clear days - the Mediterranean Sea. The public rooms, boasting Murano chandeliers and working fireplaces, are works of art, frescoed during the 17th century by such luminaries as Pannini, and invite you to spend some time marveling at their brilliant colors and design. Rooms are situated in three buildings, with 13 in the main villa, 20 in the Lemonaia and 25 in the Paggeria, the three of which are interconnected by an underground passageway. All accommodations are similar in style with traditional décor and design details, and there are connecting rooms for families. With dining outside from June to September, the restaurant showcases traditional Roman cuisine with some surprisingly light touches.
NOTE: Complimentary shuttle service to the Frascati rail station is available daily except Mondays; on a request basis between 10:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Space is available on a first come first served basis. The train reaches the center of Rome in approximately 30 minutes.
